About this work
A wide lake stretches across the canvas, its far shore marked by a band of trees turned yellow, orange and violet-grey with autumn, reflected almost mirror-like in the calm surface below. A grassy slope occupies the foreground, descending toward the water's edge, while a vast, heavily clouded sky fills nearly two-thirds of the composition above.
Cool silvery greys in the sky and water set off the warm golds and rust tones of the autumn foliage. The clouds are built up with thick, textured strokes that suggest movement and shifting light, while the water is rendered more smoothly to hold the reflected color. The loose, tactile brushwork and the contrast between somber sky and glowing shoreline give the scene a crisp, changeable autumn atmosphere.
