About this work
A sculpted bust of a draped figure, head tilted back and eyes closed, sits at the base of the composition while a column of ants climbs across its shoulders and drapery. Further ants and flying insects are scattered through the sky above and along a dark diagonal mass at the right, converging on the statue from several directions at once.
Dense, directional etched hatching gives the marble its weight and the fabric its folds, while the insects are picked out as small solid black silhouettes against the lighter paper. The contrast between the still, idealized face and the swarming ants creates an uneasy, faintly ominous mood, as if something were drawing them steadily toward it.
