About this work
An open box-like framework of wooden beams divides the sheet into compartments. At top a windswept face blows a gust across a reclining nude figure on a ledge; below, a ribbon-like drapery cascades through the center over a distant coastal view, while a bearded double-faced herm stands at lower left and a grid of carved figures fills a shelf at right, with silhouetted figures walking along the base.
Dense, fine hatching in black and grey builds every surface with engraved precision, from swirling drapery to distant architecture glimpsed through the frame. The fractured staging of classical and dreamlike motifs within one impossible structure gives the print a strange, mysterious charge, closer to a symbolic stage set than a single scene.
