About this work
A man and woman in medieval dress stand hand in hand at lower left, looking up at birds flying past a tall, arched tower and a pale sun or moon. To the right looms an oversized bearded figure in a hooded robe, one hand resting on the tower, surrounded by swirling flame-like forms and more birds streaming from the dark.
Crisp engraved contour lines define the tower's ribbed arches and the couple's flowing garments, while denser, turbulent hatching renders the fiery swirl behind the giant figure. The scale contrast between the small couple and the towering elder, set against the flock in flight, creates a mysterious, almost visionary atmosphere.
