About this work
The sheet is divided into panels: a top row of six crouching guardians with ram, lion, elephant and jackal heads; a middle row where a black jackal-headed figure gestures toward a robed man holding a scroll, beside a seated dog-like creature and a green falcon-headed figure holding a white lotus; and a bottom row where a grey, crocodile-jawed devourer opens its jaws beside three more seated animal-headed guardians.
Bold black outlines separate flat washes of orange, ochre, green and black across the compartmentalized panels, echoing the register format of ancient tomb painting. The graphic, poster-like color and stark contrasts lend the underworld tribunal a menacing, ritualistic charge.
