Movement I

A tight group of hooded, heavily draped figures surrounds a donkey burdened with tied sacks and bundles; a boy stands closest to the animal while an older bearded man gestures beside him. A stone trough or well and a large cart wheel fill the lower left, and scattered pale flecks fill the black sky like falling snow.

Dense cross-hatching and stippling build deep, velvety blacks against the luminous white flecks, giving every fold of drapery a sharp, sculptural edge. The elongated, mask-like faces and huddled poses lend the print a severe, ritual stillness, more dreamlike procession than everyday scene.
