About this work

A bare-chested man holds a large fish above his head at the center of a small group standing on a pebbled shore. Two women, one nude, cradle carved fish-shaped bundles against their bodies, and a child stands among them; two boats float on the water behind, under a night sky dense with stars.

Fine stippled hatching in near-black and teal-green ink builds the figures' pale, elongated bodies against a densely speckled dark ground. The flattened, frieze-like arrangement and stylised anatomy give the print a ritual, otherworldly quality, closer to myth than genre scene.
