About this work
A wide-eyed face stares out from the center of a symmetrical composition, crowned with leaves and flanked by ghostly profile masks, a skull, and a bird-like head. Below, two crossed forearms meet at interlaced hands above a web of root-like veins shaped like a heart, while small gnomish figures crouch in the lower corners holding orbs and masks.
Rendered entirely in fine black stippling and cross-hatching on white paper, the print builds volume through sheer density of marks rather than line or wash. The obsessive, symmetrical arrangement and crowded imagery give the sheet a hallucinatory, ritual intensity.
