About this work
A humanoid figure fills the composition, its lower face and chest overrun by a dense tangle of roots resembling a beard. Two large, shell-like fan shapes radiate from either side of its head, and its raised arms end in open hands whose fingers dissolve into gnarled roots. Bare, thorny branches fill the space around the figure, merging with its legs at the base of the image.
The image is built entirely from fine, dense engraved lines, using tight hatching and swirling curls to model volume in black and white alone. Meandering root and branch patterns repeat across skin, arms and background alike, blurring the line between figure and vegetation, giving the print a dense, obsessive, otherworldly atmosphere.
