About this work
A tangled mass of thick roots, rendered in bright scratched white against deep black, spreads across the lower two-thirds of the sheet as if lit from within; above, a turbulent dark sky is scattered with small pale dots suggesting stars and faint drifting haze. No human figures appear in this half of the composition, which reads as an intimate close view of tree and cosmos.
Worked entirely in fine incised line and dense stipple, the print builds its forms from countless overlapping marks, giving the roots a sculptural, almost skeletal presence against the velvety black ground. The stark tonal contrast and absence of any figure produce a hushed, mysterious atmosphere.
