About this work
A human head and neck in profile form the print's outline, its interior split by a jagged zigzag line into separate compartments. These hold armored warriors with spears, a standing nude figure, a seated robed woman, a shepherd tending sheep and goats, and smaller huddled figures, with a full moon hovering above the crown and a coiled snake near the base of the neck.
Executed as a fine black-line etching with dense stippling and crosshatched shading, the print builds rich tonal depth from pure black and white. The compartmentalized, dreamlike arrangement of unrelated scenes within a single silhouette gives the bookplate design a mysterious, symbolic character.
