About this work
A rounded, skull-like shape sits centered in the composition, its domed cranium built from thick, cracked pigment that catches light like old bone; below, darker crevices suggest eye sockets and a jawline with bared teeth, sinking into shadow. The form seems to float against a deep wine-red and grey field, with drips running toward the lower edge.
The surface is built almost sculpturally, cracked and crusted paint standing proud of the canvas and catching real light across the cranium. Warm ochre and gold dominate the upper form against a surrounding wash of maroon and plum, giving the image a somber, memento-mori quality through rough, tactile handling.
