About this work
A long silvery fish curves head-down toward a small red egg set in a shallow dish, the grouping resting on a dark tabletop. A pale plate edge glints in the lower foreground, while faint red marks in the upper corner suggest an indistinct shape half-hidden in shadow behind the arrangement.
The palette stays almost entirely in near-black greens and browns, broken only by the fish's cool silver flank and the single note of red at the egg. Paint is dragged on thickly with a palette knife, leaving ridged strokes that catch light along the fish's back, giving the still life a brooding, nocturnal weight.
