About this work
A cluster of round flower heads — one pale white, the rest warm brown and ochre — is gathered in a plain cylindrical white vase, viewed from behind so the fibrous backs of the blooms, rather than their petals, face the viewer. The vase sits on a bare tabletop against a flat, featureless grey wall.
Paint is laid on in thick, sculptural daubs, each flower head reduced to a rounded mass of impasto with strong cast shadows separating the forms. The narrow tonal range of greys and warm browns, together with the coarse, tactile surface, gives the small study a somber, weighty presence rather than decorative charm.
