About this work

A pale, elongated shape occupies the lower two-thirds of the canvas, its rounded body and thin projecting limbs suggesting an animal strung up by the legs, its head lost in the dark mass above. Black vertical drips run down like ropes or falling rain, framing the pale form against a cold blue-grey field.

Built with dense impasto over a crumpled surface, the palette moves from near-black through slate blue to bone white, with small flashes of red breaking the cold scheme. Rough, dragged strokes and dripping paint give the picture a raw texture, and the overall mood is dark and heavy, evoking the weight of a hung carcass.
