About this work
Two large pomegranate halves dominate the composition, their pale pink rinds cut open to reveal clusters of dark red seeds studding the interior. The fruit rests on a golden-brown surface with a deep blue ground behind, while loose passages of white and grey drapery or additional fruit fill the lower right corner.
Rendered almost entirely in impasto, the pale flesh of the fruit is built from thick strokes of blush pink, cream and white, with the seeds dotted in as dabs of crimson and near-black. The cobalt background is scraped and layered for texture, intensifying the contrast with the warm fruit. The heavy, tactile paint surface gives the still life a bold, sculptural presence.
