About this work
A lone burdock plant stands isolated against a bare tan backdrop, its thick pale stem branching into several round, spiky orange-brown flower heads. Broad grey-green leaves fan out at the base, catching a raking light that throws a long grey shadow across the ground to the right.
Paint is applied in thick, sculptural strokes, the stem and leaves built from heavy white and ochre impasto that stands proud of the canvas. The narrow range of warm neutrals and the isolated, close-up framing give the study a quiet, almost sculptural intensity, closer to observation than decoration.
