About this work

A shallow glass bowl sits at upper left and a pale onion glows at upper right. A plate holding two crossed twigs occupies the lower left corner, while a bundle of dry stalks crosses the center toward a small mound of paint. Together the sparse arrangement reads as a rustic, unpretentious table setting.

Painted in warm terracotta, dusty pink and ochre with heavy palette-knife strokes, the surface is thick and scumbled throughout. Light picks out the onion's curve and the pale rim of the bowl against the ruddy ground, while the narrow tonal range gives the scene a quiet, earthy stillness.
