About this work
A seal's head fills almost the entire canvas, turned three-quarter toward the viewer with its jaws open wide to reveal rows of pale teeth and a pink-white mouth interior. Small dark eyes and rounded ears sit above the muzzle, with a hint of the sleek body curving away to the lower right.
Cool blues, teals and whites model the wet-looking fur and open mouth, built up with thick, choppy strokes, while the background is scored with vertical streaks of maroon, black and pink. The contrast between the icy animal and the smoldering red ground gives the head a startled, aggressive intensity.
