About this work

Two stylized birds meet head-on at the center of the canvas, beaks and blood-red combs colliding while their bodies dissolve into sweeping streaks of feather-like brushwork. The left bird's plumage is built from bands of gold, black and crimson, the right from broad strokes of white, against a pale, smoky ground that gives no hint of any arena beyond the fight itself.

The palette stays close to grayish white, punctuated by hits of red, ochre and indigo where the birds meet. Paint is dragged wet-into-wet in long, confident sweeps rather than drawn in outline, so form gives way to motion, producing a charged, expressionistic burst of energy rather than a descriptive scene.
