About this work
A seal's head is shown frontally at close range, its jaws opened wide to expose sharp teeth and a red-pink mouth. Small dark eyes sit above a pale, weathered muzzle, and the head fills nearly the whole canvas against a loose, brushy background.
The fur is built from creamy whites, greys and ochres with visible knife and brush marks, while the background erupts in bright yellow streaked with turquoise and red drips. The sharp contrast between the muted animal and the acid-bright ground gives the image a sudden, startling energy.
