About this work
A sturdy, dog-faced primate stands in strict profile, all four legs planted on tawny ground. Thick fur cascades from its neck and shoulders like a mane, and its head turns slightly toward the viewer, showing dark eyes and a heavy muzzle. Sparse dry grass and hints of structures occupy the background.
Colour, not anatomy, drives the picture: the mane is worked in hot strokes of red, orange and cream, while the torso and legs are painted in unexpected turquoise and mint green over an earthy yellow ground. Paint is dragged and dripped in thick vertical runs, giving the animal a scorched, almost molten surface and a tense, watchful presence.
