About this work
Rounded, swollen forms wrapped in strips of pale cloth-like texture cluster along the lower half of the canvas, resting on a narrow pale ledge. Behind them rises a wall of dark vertical slats or fence boards, dividing the composition into a flat grey backdrop and a dense, tactile foreground mass. The wrapped shapes read alternately as gnarled roots, limbs or bundled sacks, ambiguous but insistently physical.
The palette is restrained to charcoal grey, bone and ochre, with the surface heavily built up in cracked, encrusted ridges that catch raking light and cast real shadow. The vertical boards behind are scored with fine parallel lines, contrasting with the lumpy, organic texture below. The overall mood is brooding and tactile, closer to relief sculpture than painted illusion.
