About this work
A large dark canvas is dominated by a cave-like arch of charred, blackened surface running across the upper two-thirds, its texture rippled and creased as if scorched or crumpled. Below, the picture opens into a churn of gold, cream and dull red pigment pooling at the base, while the upper right corner breaks into flecks of blue and violet.
The paint is built up in thick, encrusted layers, with dripped black lines scoring a crumpled, foil-like texture throughout, giving the work a burnt, geological quality rather than a legible scene. The palette stays close to soot black, ochre and cool blue, and the effect is smoldering and enigmatic, more a record of process and material than of any single subject.
