About this work
A rough, upright silhouette rises from the lower edge of a flat turquoise ground. Dark, pointed shapes at the top read like ears above a peaked head, while the mass below is built from mottled pink, white and ochre patches that could be a muzzle or chest. Streaks of bright orange run down both sides like drips or fur.
Paint is laid on in thick, gestural ridges with a palette knife, colors largely unmixed and pushed wet-into-wet. The flat turquoise ground pushes the hot orange and pink center forward, and the raw, unresolved texture gives the abstracted form a restless, mysterious presence rather than a literal likeness.
