About this work
The composition is entirely non-figurative: a dark, near-black ground fills most of the canvas, broken by a single pale vertical passage running from top to bottom slightly left of center. Within that passage, patches of white, ochre and pale green surface unevenly, as though scraped or worn through the surrounding paint, while flecks of blue appear at the upper edges.
The paint is applied in heavy, dragged layers that leave a coarse, weathered texture across the surface, closer to raw material than illustration. Dark tones absorb light almost completely, pulling the eye toward the single lit fissure at center. The effect is dense, brooding and introspective, more a study of surface and matter than subject.
