About this work
A single robed figure stands at the center, its head capped by a white, pointed headdress and its body wrapped in a heavy red mantle with gold-trimmed folds. Large flat fields of mustard yellow, cream and sage green surround the figure like broken plaster, while a band of teal-green vertical striations runs along the lower edge.
The surface is built up in thick, pitted acrylic impasto that cracks and blisters like aged gesso, giving the whole panel the worn, tactile look of a fragment pried from an old icon. Warm ochre and red dominate against the cooler teal base, and the rough, uneven brushwork lends the piece a solemn, weathered gravity.
