About this work
A square wooden board, framed and divided by grooves into four sections, is studded with dozens of rusted nails driven in at slanting angles. The nails form two fan-like clusters leaning inward from each corner toward the middle, leaving the central cross of the panel bare, scorched, stained wood.
The board itself is charred, bleached and streaked with grime and traces of white pigment, its grain and saw cuts left exposed rather than painted over. The rust of the nails, the blackened wood, and the raw physicality of metal driven into timber give the piece a stark, tactile presence closer to assemblage than painting.
