About this work
A bust-length figure of Christ, head bowed and turned in profile, wears a woven crown of thorns with blood tracing down his temple and beard. His bare shoulder and torso emerge from a torrent of deep crimson drapery that dominates the lower two-thirds of the canvas, while only the face catches direct, raking light against a murky, undefined ground.
The palette is almost monochrome, warm ochre flesh set against near-black shadow and a single dominant red, built up in thick, dragged impasto and scraped passages that expose the canvas weave. Loose, urgent brushwork and the raw contrast of light and darkness give the image a charged, sorrowful intensity.
