About this work
Five men in military camouflage stand grouped before a flat red wall; one plays a guitar while the others sing with open mouths. At right, a soldier on crutches with an amputated leg and a medal on his chest steps forward alone, his prosthetic foot in a red shoe. Berets, a striped sailor's shirt and worn boots mark them as veterans.
Thick, choppy strokes of green, khaki and ochre sit against a vivid, unmodulated red ground, giving the canvas a raw, poster-like intensity. Faces are built with rough, expressive daubs rather than fine detail, and the flattened space pushes the men toward the viewer, mixing camaraderie with visible loss.
