About this work
Rows of near-black tree trunks rise through a dense screen of magenta, crimson, ochre and green foliage, while a pale diagonal streak of light sweeps in from the upper left like wind or mist cutting through the park. In the lower right corner a couple, the woman in a red dress, walks the shadowed grass path.
The foliage is built from short, dabbing strokes of saturated, non-naturalistic color that flatten the space into a dense decorative pattern, while the pale streak breaks the rhythm like a gust moving through the trees. Warm crimson and gold contrast with cool green and violet, giving the scene a restless, turbulent energy beneath its festive color.
