About this work
A pale, limp figure of Christ, crowned with thorns, is lowered from a wooden cross by a dark-robed man while a kneeling figure below embraces his legs. To the right, women with covered or bowed faces mourn, one nursing a child, and a man in green holds a white shroud. Behind them, red-walled towers and a ladder against the cross recede into a golden hillside under a pale sky.
Built from thick, restless strokes of ochre, red, and grey-green, the palette turns the sacred scene into an earthy, feverish vision. Loose, gestural brushwork distorts anatomy and faces, lending the composition raw emotional urgency over polished devotional calm.
