About this work
A bare-chested young man leans forward, mouth open in a shout, gripping a pole braced across the back of a large pig whose body is wrapped in loops of pink, yellow and green ribbons. Behind him a grinning, flower-crowned figure looks on, while the dark shape of another animal's head emerges at the right edge of the canvas.
Painted in near-monochrome darkness broken by a single raking light, the palette stays within ochre, olive and maroon against black. Thick, slashing strokes and heavy impasto in the ribbons contrast with smoothly blended flesh tones, giving the scene a raucous, theatrical energy suited to carnival revelry.
