About this work
Along a muddy village lane, a row of overflowing trash bins spills bags and debris while a flock of black crows swarms overhead and perches on the rims. In the foreground a man in a striped shirt recoils with arms outstretched as another figure grips his shoulder; two women beside them press hands to their faces. Further back, passersby continue past under bare autumn trees.
Bold, unblended strokes of green, red, orange and blue-grey build the figures and foliage with an energetic, caricatured roughness. Crows are dabbed in as quick black marks scattered across sky and bins alike. The lively, clashing palette and exaggerated gestures give the everyday scene a comic yet visceral charge, at once ordinary and repulsive.
