About this work

In a tall, narrow format, a gaunt, bearded man crowned with thorns bows his head under a heavy dark-red mantle draped over a paler undergarment. His hands are drawn together at his waist and a bent knee emerges at the lower edge, set against a loosely brushed, abstracted brown and cream ground.

The saturated red of the mantle is built up in thick, slashing strokes that dominate the composition against ochre-brown shadow and pale flesh tones. Raw, expressive brushwork and strong tonal contrast give the figure a charged, dramatic intensity centered on suffering and endurance.
