About this work
A large sailboat lies overturned on a stony beach, its mast and rigging tilted at a steep angle against a hazy sky. Dark mountain ridges frame a calm bay behind it, and several small figures move across the foreground near the hull, including one in red and another wading barefoot beside an orange buoy.
The scene is built with thick, palette-knife strokes in muted greens, grays and blue-greens, with the pale sky left loosely scumbled. Light is flat and overcast, giving the composition a subdued, heavy atmosphere. Forms are simplified and roughly blocked in rather than detailed, creating a raw, weather-beaten impression of the aftermath of a storm.
