"The Lamentation of Christ"

A group of men and women carry a nude, wounded body stretched across a white sheet through a village yard, houses and a pale sky behind them. A heavyset man raises a bottle and laughs, a woman in red looks on, and a young woman in blue grips the sheet with a strained, tearful expression, while on the right a grinning policeman looks toward gallows-like structures on the hill.

Loose, thick brushwork and clashing colors, hot yellows and pinks against muddy browns and cold blues, give the scene a feverish, unsettled charge. Faces are sketched with quick, distorted strokes rather than careful modeling, and the gallows silhouettes on the horizon turn a gathering into a scene of grief and menace.
