About this work
A vintage black bakelite telephone is mounted on a wooden board against green-and-cream striped wallpaper, its round dial and curved handset rendered in close detail. A tangled cord loops from the socket above down past the phone and back up to the receiver, the whole fixture isolated against the pattern with nothing else in frame.
Rendered in pastel with a smooth, almost photographic finish, the piece relies on close tonal modeling of black plastic against pale stripes to build volume. Soft directional light picks out highlights on the dial and cord, and the tight, isolated framing of an obsolete object gives the image a quiet, nostalgic stillness.
