About this work

A pack horse, harnessed with saddle and ropes, is nearly buried under an enormous load of medieval weaponry -- spears, halberds, pikes, a sword, a mace, a bow and bound sacks. A bearded man walks beside it, gripping the bridle, his profile turned toward the mass of arms he leads.

Worked entirely in fine black line on cream paper, the print builds volume through dense cross-hatching typical of etching, with no color beyond the ink. The crowded stacking of implements against a bare horizon gives the scene a dry, meticulous intensity.
