About this work
A gaunt, bearded old man sits hunched with his arms wrapped around drawn-up knees inside a narrow, almond-shaped mandorla that dominates the composition. To the left, a disembodied hand emerges from a dark robe, fingers raised in a gesture of blessing. To the right, a wooden tower church, a rooster's head and a slatted wooden enclosure crowd together against a rocky, wind-swept hillside.
Executed in fine, densely worked etched lines, the print sets a luminous white figure against surrounding fields of black and grey cross-hatching, heightening the sense of isolation. The symbolic, tightly packed imagery and stark contrasts of light and dark give the scene a heavy, brooding solemnity, evoking suffering and religious ordeal rather than a straightforward likeness.
