About this work
A monumental double-headed eagle bearing imperial regalia — crown, orb and jeweled cross — fills the left side, its wing merging into a winged, angel-like figure that cradles a uniformed man raising a sword, two women, and a small child. Below them, a palace facade and a tangle of steam trains and rails stretch across a dark, star-flecked ground, evoking a fall from power toward departure or exile.
Etched in dense black with touches of warm sepia on the eagle and the angel's burden, the print combines heraldic ornament with fine crosshatched shadow. The collision of imperial insignia, an angelic rescue and grinding trains below builds a somber, elegiac vision of collapse.
