About this work
Six figures, several with arms or torsos wrapped as if bound, fall upside down and at odd angles through empty space. Below them a band of red and blue scribbled marks forms flickering flames meeting dark waves, while the falling bodies are scattered across the upper two-thirds of the sheet with no ground or setting shown.
Pale ochre and lilac washes tint the falling bodies against an otherwise bare, cream-colored ground, while the fire and water beneath are built from urgent red, blue and black hatched strokes. The disorienting inverted poses and the plunge toward the flames give the print a somber, fatalistic charge.
