About this work
Three men surround a long, green-scaled dragon-like creature confined within a crude fence of lashed wooden stakes: one stands centrally in a pale robe and wide-brimmed hat, leaning on a staff; another crouches in a red robe and white turban; a third sits at right in a striped turban, smoking a long pipe. The reptile's armored, tooth-lined snout is visible over the fence rails, with sparse pines and bare hills behind.
Cool sand and stone tones set off the creature's mottled jade-green hide, the only strong color note in a muted, desaturated palette. Flat light and simplified, silhouette-like forms give the scene a watchful hush, the men's calm postures at odds with the captive beast beside them.
