About this work

Four nude figures are arranged on a rickety, ladder-like structure of stacked platforms, each one curled, crouched or stretched out in postures of exhaustion rather than rest. Liquid pours from small spouts at each level down to the one below, and a single distant figure stands alone on the ground far beneath the structure.

Rendered entirely in fine black hatching on white paper, the etching builds deep shadow around the pale bodies through dense parallel lines, giving the scene a heavy, oppressive weight. The impossible architecture and languid, boneless poses of the figures evoke torpor and inertia rather than physical rest.
