About this work
At left a standing nude man grips a long spear, beside him a bearded man wrapped in drapery gestures forward. Both confront a gaunt, wasted figure at right, mouth open in a scream, wrapped in a torn cloak and lunging toward them from a dark cave mouth tangled with bare roots and twisted trees. Carved letters are visible in the rock at the lower right.
Fine, tangled linework builds the knotted roots and jagged rock into a near-abstract mass of dark hatching, against which the figures stand out in cleaner contour. The gaunt intruder's stretched limbs and open mouth are drawn with nervous, jittery strokes, giving the whole scene a mysterious, unsettling charge.
