About this work
A large bear lies curled within a circular frame, its heavy body and lowered head dominating the medallion. Around the rim, dense miniature vignettes crowd the border — a crowned figure with a staff, mounted riders, a line of small marching figures, a ship, a monkey's face, and scattered symbols — while a banner beneath the image reads "Ex-Libris Arkadia Elfimova."
The whole sheet is worked in fine, dense pen-like hatching typical of intaglio printmaking, building deep blacks around the bear's fur and the shadowed background while leaving the paper's white for highlights. The crowded ornamental border and the still, watchful bear give the print a dense, mysterious, almost heraldic character.
