About this work
A bearded, winged figure with a heavy mantle stands behind a nude young woman, one arm draped over her shoulder while her hand grips a tall scythe planted at her feet and her other hand lifts a fold of drapery at her hip. Along the left edge a cluster of small robed clerical and military figures huddles in shadow, while a chain of tiny figures climbs a jagged staff on the right.
Rendered entirely in fine etched hatching, the composition sets dense black cross-hatching in the background and wings against the untouched white of the woman's body, producing stark tonal contrast. The meticulous linework gives the print a somber, enigmatic, theatrical quality typical of allegorical engraving.
