About this work
A young woman stands with her shirt lifted, bare from the waist up, as a bald, robed man kneels before her, one hand raised toward her chest and the other resting near her hip. To the left, beyond a door frame, a second man in a coat and cap gestures upward with a raised hand, only partly visible at the edge of the scene.
Fine crosshatched lines in black ink build volume and shadow across the figures and the paneled door, with large areas of blank paper standing in for flat light. The cropped framing of the gesturing man and the intimate, ambiguous contact between the kneeling figure and the woman give the print a tense, voyeuristic quality.
