About this work
A hooded, robed elder is shown in profile, head bowed, set inside an arched niche with faint smaller figures traced within its dark curve behind him. The image is enclosed in a plain inner frame, which is in turn surrounded by a wide dark border wrapped with a knotted, star-studded chain.
Fine stippled and hatched linework models the sunken cheeks and long beard of the old man in soft greys, while the sparkling stars of the border are left as bright untouched paper, creating a strong light-dark contrast. The icon-like framing and quiet, downcast pose give the print a hushed, devotional mood.
