About this work
An elderly woman with her hair in a bun sits in a chair, mouth open as if speaking, hands resting on the chair's arms. A man bends sharply over her from behind, one hand reaching toward her lap while his legs cross awkwardly behind him. A Russian inscription below the image reads "D. Kharms, Old Woman."
Rapid, scratchy etched lines build the figures and the patterned upholstery of the chair, leaving the setting otherwise bare and undefined. The compressed poses and unresolved gesture give the scene a strange, faintly unsettling ambiguity.
